Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add items to my pantry?

There are four ways to add items:

1. Barcode scan — Tap the scan button and point your camera at a barcode. FreshKeep looks up the product automatically.

2. Receipt scan — Scan a grocery receipt and FreshKeep will add all items at once.

3. Voice input — Tap the microphone and say what you bought (e.g., "Add a gallon of milk to the fridge").

4. Manual entry — Tap the + button and fill in the details yourself.

How does FreshKeep estimate expiration dates?

FreshKeep uses a built-in database of 200+ common foods with default shelf life estimates. Estimates adjust based on storage location (fridge, freezer, pantry, counter) and whether the item has been opened.

You can always override any expiration date — FreshKeep will remember your preference for future items of the same type.

Why isn't barcode scanning finding my product?

FreshKeep uses the Open Food Facts database (255M+ products). Some store-brand or regional products may not be listed yet.

If a product isn't found, you'll get a manual entry form pre-filled with whatever was scanned. You can also search by product name instead of barcode.

Does FreshKeep work offline?

Yes! FreshKeep is offline-first. All core features — adding items, tracking expiration, shopping lists, notifications — work without an internet connection.

Barcode lookup and recipe website fetching require an internet connection, but you can always add items manually.

How do I export my data?

Go to Settings > Data Export to export your pantry data as a CSV file. You can save it to Files, email it, or open it in any spreadsheet app.

How do notifications work?

FreshKeep sends reminders before items expire. By default, you'll be notified 3 days before, 1 day before, and on the day of expiration at 8:00 AM.

You can customize notification timing per item or globally in Settings > Notifications. Make sure notifications are enabled for FreshKeep in iOS Settings.

Is my data shared or sold?

No. FreshKeep does not sell your data, show ads, or track you. All data is stored on your device. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

How do I delete all my data?

Delete individual items by swiping left in the pantry view. To clear everything, delete the app — all locally stored data is removed automatically. If you use iCloud sync, manage synced data in iOS Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Manage Storage.
